I often get asked when is the best time of day to workout.
Will I get better results if I train in the morning or evening?
The Truth is…
The Best time of the day to workout is ANYTIME
It’s all about just getting your workout DONE.
Do you really think your body knows the difference between burning 600 calories in the morning or 600 calories at night.
At the end of the day its still 600 calories of FAT gone.
There’s a lot of talk from fitness gurus and science researchers that say (usually based on small studies) that you must train in the morning on a empty stomach.
Then some say you must not train without having eaten beforehand.
Or you must do cardio in the morning and weights in the evening.
Forget all the minutia – and just do a workout when it suits YOU best…
Having trained clients for over 10 years I have seen people who think they must workout first thing in the morning to get the best result.
They make a few workouts.
Then start missing workouts and making excuses.
Then Just give up for a while, as it’s all too hard.
You see we are all different and not everyone is their best first thing in the morning so if this sounds like you then it would be best to train in the afternoon or evening.
For years I had a very fit and strong client in amazing shape that trained 7.30pm at night – she was a machine.
Then for some reason she thought she should do mornings.
Well it was not the same person.
She had no energy, no strength, no enthusiasm, was tired and just FLAT.
Luckily for her after two attempts she realised.
She loves training in the evening, has heaps more energy, can push herself harder and slept great at night.
So if you’re not a morning person.
Do not force yourself to train in the morning, as it’s often a path to skipping workouts, making excuses and giving up.
You will still get fantastic results if your trained in the evening and followed a balanced eating plan.
Now the same goes for clients who say they will workout in the evening.
If you’re the type of person.
- Who has unpredictable finishing times at work.
- Spends all day dreading have to workout in the evening.
- Consumes their time with coming up with excuses to skip their evening workout.
- Or is going to be easily led astray by an invite to the Bar after work then you should really think about mornings or the afternoon (your lunch break).
That’s why I say…
The best time to workout is ANYTIME – Just get it done
The other important factor is to plan your workouts into your week.
Try not to leave it to chance as the week may go by and you will have not done a single workout.
I have also heard many times…
If I don’t make it in the morning for a workout I will come tonight
They did not make either…
So if your goal is 3 workouts per week.
Write them on your calendar.
Book them in your diary.
Schedule them in your phone – set reminders.
At least then you have made an appointment with yourself.
This appointment should be as important as your wedding day.
It should not be moved around at the last minute.
By scheduling in 3 appointments you know that at the end of the week you will have DONE 3 workouts.
If you do anymore that’s an AWESOME bonus.
